Ogilvy & Mather is an agency within the WPP Group that was founded in 1948 by David Ogilvy, who has had a tremendous impact on the advertising world. There are now 450 Ogilvy & Mather offices in 171 cities around the world. The ad below was done by the Ogilvy & Mather Toronto, Canada office by Janet Vonk and Nancy Kestin.
This spot may be shocking to people the first time that they watch it, particularly because of how we view the beauty industry. The transformation that the model makes from the beginning to the end of the spot is very dramatic and almost looks like an entirely different person. Then, once the model is done being photographed, she goes through many changes to erase her "flaws" within the editing process.
I feel that this spot is very powerful, because it shows the truth while simultaneoulsy promoting beauty products. However, this spot does not preach to the viewer to go buy Dove products. It mostly leaves the viewer (at least in my case) with a feeling that Dove is a real, honest brand. When a company can make a viewer feel that way, I think they have accomplished something great... trust. Also, these spots show men that women are real. They do not look like supermodels in ads, because most likely those supermodels don't even look like that in real life. This commercial really helps boost one's self esteem.
Below is another spot from the Dove Beauty campaign that I feel enstills the same feelings in women and also encourages them to be proactive in helping their children feel the same way that they do.
