StrawberryFrog

StrawberryFrog is an independent advertising agency, with offices in New York City, London, and Sao Paulo. Their ultimate goal is to build a cultural movement for the products of each of their clients. Below is an advertisement that StrawberryFrog did for Heineken.

I think that this spot is clever. Although it was supposed to be sort of "James Bond-esque", it also reminded me of the game and movie "Clue." I thought that this spot was very intriguing. It definitely kept me watching to see what would happen next. I think that the advertisement makes the viewer think about what's going on and that is why it is fun to watch. I like that in the end we find out what it really going on with the situation (that the husband has ordered his wife a Heineken and room service was trying to get there in time to deliver it to her). Overall, I thought that this spot was effective in linking the mystery concept and the product, Heineken beer, and I definitely thought that it did a good job of engaging the consumer.

Venables, Bell & Partners

Venables, Bell & Partners is an independent advertising agency headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Some clients of Venables, Bell & Partners include Audi, HBO, Intel, Nestea, and Orville Redenbacher's. The spot below was done by Venables, Bell & Partners for Audi.

This spot is humorous, because lots of people feel as if they need to live up to a certain expectation in their life, say of being a doctor or lawyer to make their family proud. Although the situation was kind of taking to an extreme in this spot, I thought that it did an excellent job of getting their message of "Break the cycle" across to the viewer. In actuality by purchasing a Audi instead of a BMW, Lexus, or Mercedes-Benz, one isn't really "breaking the cycle." Audi is definitely a luxurious brand as well as these other brands. I think that this commercial was geared towards adults with relatively high income (to be able to purchase this vehicle), and I think that did a good job of addressing them. The New Audi A5 is very luxurious as well as sporty, which most people in the market for a BMW, Lexus, or Mercedes-Benz are also looking for. Overall, I thought that this spot was effective.

Droga5

Droga5 is an awesome independent advertising agency that is headquartered in New York City. Droga5 initiated the "Tap Project" for UNICEF, which I discussed in detail in a previous post. Some other clients of Droga5 include the following: Net 10, Unilever, NYC Department of Education, and Activision. Below is a viral video that Droga5 released on the internet for Activision

I think that making this viral video was a really cool way to promote Activision's product Guitar Hero/Rock Bank. When I began to watch this video, I was kind of confused as to what was going on, but when I finally put it all together I really enjoyed the spot. I think that that is one thing that makes it great, because the viewer is rewarded by their realization of what is really going on. I think that Droga5 did a great job of thinking of something so unique and making it effective, especially for making a viral video. Having a great viral video is actually a great feat, because it is not forced in anyone's face. Individuals have to go out to find it on their own. I would say with almost 2.5 million views on YouTube, Droga5 did a great job with this one!

Secret Weapon Marketing

Secret Weapon Marketing is a very unique independent advertising agency that is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. One thing that indefinitely makes Secret Weapon Marketing stand out is the fact that they will never take on more than three clients during the same period of time. However, Secret Weapon Marketing is like most traditional advertising agencies in that they are a full-service advertising agency and have some pretty hefty awards under their belt. Right now, the two clients that Secret Weapon Marketing is dealing with are Jack in the Box and Southern California (SoCal) Honda Dealers. Below is a spot that was done by Secret Weapon Marketing for Jack in the Box.

Although this spot was quite humorous, I think that it could possibly offend some people. I mean even if it was aired only in areas outside of Philadelphia, you never know who may have just moved here from Philly. I may be looking into this too much by saying these things, but one always needs to keep in mind the problems that can often arise from stereotyping a group of individuals. One thing that I liked about this spot was how "Jack" went about sending someone to Philly for an extended period of time in order to really make an authentic Philly Cheesesteak. This spot was goofy, but I believe effective to the audience that it was intended to target. I mean some people from Philly may even think that this is funny, because of how untrue some stereotypes can be. One never knows.

R/GA

R/GA is an independent advertising agency that specializes in digital media work. R/GA is headquartered in New York City, with other offices in both San Francisco and London. A notable project that R/GA has previously done is for Nike+, which links one's iPod to their Nike athletic shoe, so that one can track and record their workouts online. With this product, one can also program their iPod to change to a faster or slower song depending on the speed that they are moving at. This interactive technology has evolved and continues to do so. On R/GA's website, one can see that they were named the "Digital Agency of the Decade" and that their campaign for Nike+ was named "Digital Campaign of the Decade." Now those are some pretty big accomplishments! Some other clients of R/GA include Verizon Wireless, Ad Council, Bank of America, Purina, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

RG/A also has a big hand in Nike's ID products. R/GA worked with Adobe to developed advanced imaging techniques so that the products can be viewed in very close detail as well as from many angles. This has been a hit for Nike, because the customers can act as their own designers are customize their product to get exactly what they want. Teams can now even customizer gear and order it online through the Nike ID website. Check out these links for more information!

I believe that this campaign was wildly successful because of how unique and interactive it is. Also, I believe that these personalized products attract a very broad range of consumers, which is a great thing, because everyone can personalize their sneakers in their own way!

Taxi

Taxi is an independent advertising agency that is headquartered in Toronto. They are most known for their work for Viagra, but other clients of theirs include Koodo Mobile, Mini Cooper, Aviva, WestJet, and Dairy Farmers of Canada. Below are two television spots that Taxi did for Viagra. I like Taxi's work for Viagra, because the message of the product gets across, but without offending anyone that could potentially be in the room when the commercial airs on television.

The first spot, "The International Language of Viagra," is very clever. We as viewers have no idea what the two men talking are actually saying, other than when they use the word "Viagra." However, people that are aware of the product definitely get the message.

In this spot, the words are bleeped out and a Viagra pill covers up the guy's mouth that is talking. I thought that this was clever, because people get the message, but nothing is actually said. The viewer can tell what is up, because the lady standing next to the two men looks very uncomfortable being there.

I think that both of these spots did a great job of reminding consumers about the product in a humorous, memorable manner. Viagra has been around for a while, so most consumers are already aware of the product. These spots also were great, because they were not offensive, which is great because this product has the risk of offending some parties or making people feel uncomfortable. Overall, I would say that both of these spots were effective.

Rethink

Rethink is an independent advertising agency headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. They are most known for the work that they have done for Playland, but some of their other clients include Science World, Future Shop, BC Lions, Victoria Bug Zoo, and Coast Capital Savings. I really like the work that Rethink has done for Playland, because it is kind of opposite of what one would expect to see in an advertisement for a theme park. Below are two print ads done by Rethink for Playland. I find the first one very comical, because the seats of the ride are inside of beaters. Most people know that beaters are used to whip things, and that is most likely would will happen to you if you take the adventure into Playland... be "whipped" around. I think that Rethink took a very creative, unique approach to displaying what they wanted to get across to their audience. I would assume that their target audience is thirll-seeking individuals.
The spot below is humorous, because the stuffed animal is throwing up it's stuffing. often at theme parks, guests can play various games in order to win large stuffed animals. If this stuffed guy was not attending the park on his own, he must have just been forced along for an intense ride with his proud owner. Either way, it does not look like this blue guy is enjoying his time in playland. This is funny to those that are thrill-seeking, however, for those that are not, it may discourage them from trying out the Playland amusement park. I think that this campaign is successful if Playland only wants to target thrill-seeking individuals. However, they may loose business by having these ads for people that may be interested in coming just to tag along and maybe go on a couple of milder rides.

Mother

Mother is an independent advertising agency headquarted in London, England. Below are two pieces of work that Mother's New York office did for their client, Target. The first piece of work was displayed in February of 2009 in New York City's Time's Square "in honor of Shaun White and the Olympics in Vancouver" (Mother website). This "winter wonderland" scene is very cool looking and does a really good job of emphasizing the client, Target, through keeping the background black and white and having only red as a featured color. I think that this campaign is very effective, because it is sort of an untraditional way to advertise (style of multiple pieces of board making the scene), yet still somewhat traditional (billboard). My favorite part of this campaign is that it Mother did such a good job of coinciding an event going on in the world, the Olympics, with their advertising.

The next advertisement was done in August of last year, also by Mother's New York office. On the black section, it reads "1 Billboard by 4 NY Artists becomes 1,800 bags by 1 Anna Sui." People could go online and buy a piece of this billboard that would be turned into a recyclable bag from designer Anna Sui's collection. This campaign was wildly successful, and the bags sold out instantly. Below is an image of what one of the bags may look like.

I think that this campaign was so successful, because of how it involved the consumer. It also encouraged recycling which is very hot these days.

72 and Sunny

72 and Sunny is an advertising agency headquartered in Los Angeles, California. They also have an office in Amsterdam. Some of their clients include: Carls Jr., the Discovery Channel, E!, Bugaboo, and Nike Football. The spot below was done by 72 and Sunny's L.A. office for the Discovery Channel.

I really enjoyed watching this spot and think that it was very effective. I liked how the spot started by just focusing on the world as a whole and then ended up showing a variety of things and places around the world. I thought that the song was a good way to have the commercial flow together, because it was peaceful enough to not distract the viewer from the images, but it also was a great compliment to the footage that was seen throughout the spot. This spot did a great job of just showing the world and all there is to discover. It was appealing to many audiences, because all of the different things and places shown were different from one another, therefore the spot suited a vast group of interests. This spot left me eager to explore and check out some of the programs that the Discovery Channel has to offer. Overall, I think that this spot was effective as well as beautiful to watch.

Cramer-Krasselt

Cramer-Krasselt is a large, independent advertising agency that is headquarterd in my hometown, Chicago, Illinois. AirTran Airways, Bissel, Corona, GNC, Sealy, Crocs, Benjamin Moore Paints, and Ski-Doo are all clients (either past or present) of Cramer-Krasselt. Cramer-Krasselt has done a ton of really cool interactive work for Corona, including an awesome website, The Corona Beach. Here is the link to check it out: http://www.thecoronabeach.com/

On this website, one can peek around and explore all there is to offer. One can watch peaceful footage of the water as well as funny video clips. There is an events section and icons are even available for download (that one can then set as their computer screen background). Below is an image of "The Corona Beach."

I like this advertising campaign because it is subtle about the product. Unlike other advertisements that are shoving their product in the viewers face, the first photo advertisement above offers a zen, peaceful photo with only a small Corono logo in the upper right corner. The product is not bombarding the ad. On the other hand, in the second photo the product is featured, but in sort of a cool way. I feel that this photo is telling me that Corona is a product that can transition from day at the beach to night (whether for relaxing or going out). I think this campaign is great as a whole, because Corona is a brand that is highly associated with relaxing and getting away. I feel that this campaign would definitely be appealing to the target audience, and that it is very effective in doing so.

Doner

Doner is a large independent advertising agency that is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. Some of Doner's clients include Serta, the Detroit Zoo, The UPS Store, Mazda, and Del Taco. Below is a spot that Doner did for Serta.

Everyone has some method that helps them get to sleep. Whether one just hits the bed and is passed out for the night or whatever unique rituals one may practice before bed, most everyone has heard of "counting sheep" to put oneself to sleep. I liked the humor in this spot that showed that the woman had such a comfortable new matress that she no longer needed to practice her before bed ritual of counting sheep. It was also humorous that the sheep felt they would no longer have a purpose and became upset at this realization. Although talking animals may be considered cliche to some, these Serta Sheep have successfully become an icon for the company. They are now available as plush stuffed animals (pictured below) as well as slippers that can be purchased on various websites, such as EBay. I guess there are only so many ways to advertise a mattress. After all, it is just for sleeping on, so I think that this spot was pretty effective.

Richards Group

The Richards Group, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is one of the largest independent advertising agencies in the United States. Some clients of The Richards Group include the following: Chick-fil-A, Fruit of the Loom, Home Depot, Bridgestone, and Zales. Below is a television spot that The Richards Group did for Bridgestone Tires.

I think that this spot is rather clever and entertaining. At first, I didn't know what client the spot was for, which intrigued me to watch further and find out. I had two favorite parts in this commercial that I thought really made the spot cute.
1.) When Mrs. Potato Head's lips fall off and one can see them still talking as they fall down the hill.
2.) When Mrs. Potato Head replaces her "everyday" eyes with angry eyes.
Bridgestone is a pretty well established brand, and most people know what their product is and what it has to offer. This gives them freedom to do some fun things in their advertising and not just bore the consumer with features of the tires. This spot caught my attention, because ti was something that I wasn't expecting to see. Overall, I think that this made the spot effective.

Bartle Bogle Hegarty

Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) is an independent advertising agency that is headquartered in London. BBH has done work for many clients including Axe/Lynx, Cadillac, Johnnie Walker, LEGO, and Vaseline. Below is a spot, titled House, that BBH New York did for LEGO.

I really liked this commercial, because it showed off LEGO's product in a unique way. I think that it is cool how the spot focused on LEGOs are being a family bonding activity. This made the spot appeal to more than just children, but also their parents. I also liked how the footage was played faster so that the viewer was able to see the entire creation of the LEGO house that this father and son built. I remember being little and seeing commercials for LEGO products that were nothing like this. This spot really shows how using the product can let one be creative and also be rewarding when a project is complete. Overall, I liked how BBH dealt with the LEGO product in this spot.

Dentsu

Dentsu is a large, global, independent Japanese advertising agency that is headquartered in Tokyo. I was very interested to find out that in Japan, Dentsu advertisements take up between 40 and 50 percent of the commercial time on television. Talk about popularity! Some clients of Dentsu include the following: Toyota, AIG, Bridgestone, Chandon, and the NBA. Below is an advertisement that was done by Dentsu in the U.S. for the Toyota Prius.
I think that this print advertisement is very effective, especially to the target audience of the Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle. I feel that most people that own or are interested in owning a Toyota Prius are those that are environmentally conscious, given that the Prius is a hybrid vehicle and is therefore better for the environment than the average vehicle. This advertisement seems to hit home, because it shows that even though one hybrid vehicle may not make a gigantic difference, the force of many choosing to drive a Prius instead of another vehicle can really help keep the environment cleaner in the long term. I think that this print ad is very effective, and it almost makes me want to either drive less or change to driving a hybrid vehicle because of the positive impact that this can have on the environment. This ad makes people walk away feeling good about the Toyota Prius, which is the ultimate goal.

Kirshenbaum Bond

Kirshenbaum Bond is an advertising agency within the MDC holding company that is specifically headquartered in New York City. Some major clients of Kirshenbaum Bond include Target, BMW, Delta Airlines, Wendy's, and Ad Council. For BMW, Kirshenbaum Bond has done work for their website to promote both the One Series and the M Series and the X6 vehicles. Below is the link to view these pages.

*Link to BMW work on Kirshenbaum Bond website:
http://www.kb.com/#BMW
*Link to BMW work on BMW website:
http://www.bmwusa.com/Default.aspx?enc=Qjn+Ilq+tRrHwBUWJm3DOg

I think that Kirshenbaum Bond's "Pure BMW" campaign was successful, because of the interactive features that one can access on their website. They use very effective tag lines for each model. Some examples are below.

*BMW One Series- "You. The Road. One."
*BMW X6 SUV- "The first-ever Sports Activity Coupe. The all-new BMW X6. A coupe above."

Additionally, for the "M" (Mach) models of BMW, one can read an interactive story, titled "The M Story." I think that this campaign did a good job of addressing BMW's target audience by focusing on the features of the vehicle and the way that it rides, because of BMW's reputation for being "The Ultimate Driving Machine."

Cliff Freeman & Partners

Cliff Freeman & Partners is an advertising agency headquartered in New York City, that was part of the MDC holding company. Unfortunately in November of 2009, Cliff Freeman & Partners closed its doors. However before this happened, they had done some pretty great work. Some clients of Cliff Freeman & Partners included the following: Baskin Robbins, Snapple, and Quizno's. The following spot was done by Cliff Freeman & Partners for Baskin Robbins.

I think that this spot was comical, especially seeing the plastic figures dancing ontop of the cakes. I also think that it appealed to many audiences. First of all, it appealed to children that usually enjoy cakes for birthdays and ice cream on regular occasions. I remember when I was very young, I always loved going to Baskin Robbins to choose my birthday cake and the figurines that would go on top to add a personal touch. If I was a child, I'm sure I would be dancing right along witht those characters. Secondly, this commercial appeals to parents, because they are most likely the ones that will be paying for the cakes and ice cream for their children. This spot gives the overall feel that Baskin Robbins is a fun, affordable, family-oriented gathering place.
